Dancing

Moving to the beat.

Music is blaring wildly

Heart is pounding uncontrollably,

Legs are sore.

Each step has rhythm

Each step has a meaning,

A meaning that was formed long ago,

A meaning that carries traditions behind it.

I follow the steps to be graceful, happy

I follow the steps to get bad things off my mind

And it works.

The feeling I get is indescribable, unimaginable –

Amazing

Dancing is my life.

Summer’s Gone

Summer’s gone.

No more dives in crisp, clear light blue water,

No more grains of sand stuck in the buttons of my cell phone,

No more dry, cracked hair from the sun,

No more saltiness on the edges of my lips.

Summer’s gone.

We won’t be going out for coffee every night,

We won’t take walks under the moonlight,

We won’t stay up clubbing all night,

We won’t hear motorcycles racing by.

Summer’s gone.

I’ll miss the sweet scent of fig trees,

I’ll miss the meowing cat in the front yard,

I’ll miss the long, hot days,

I’ll miss my grandmother’s cooking.

Summer’s gone.

I have to leave from Greece because I have school.

Half of my friends have to go to college,

A few guys have mandatory military service,

And the rest stays in Sparta to work.

Summer’s gone.

As each person leaves, we all cry

The tears run like gushing waterfalls

But to make each other feel better we say,

Next summer, we’ll all be here together again.

The gangster swaggered down the pitch black alley like a fierce gorilla

Swung a gun to her head and slurred; “give me my money”

The petite girl scurried down the street

Halted, and got giddy because she found some money

She was prowling around desperately, clawing her way up life’s mountain of problems

She can’t feed her hunger without money

Chinese New Year kissed today

Grandmother tossed me a red envelope overflowing with money

Shopping is heroin

Just yesterday she inhaled clothes until she used up all her money

Abdel El Saied

The doctor started to yell, then he finally saw the head

Like a rose blossoming, he saw the light

He woke up to get ready for school,

Frustrated and tired, he turned on the light.

Acting up in school, giving his teachers a hard time,

The teacher yells; shut up and go stand by the switch that turns on the light.

Making bad decisions and breaking the law,

A deal goes wrong; he gets hit with the bullets that take up light

Turning blue and cold like the tundra

Goodbye world he finally met the light

As the sun kisses my forhead

And the wind brushes against my cheek

I lay there on the warm back of the soft beach

With my sisters next to me

Where the food I eat tells me a story

And the hot peppers sing their spicy song to me

I enjoy a great meal

With neighbors who are like family

Do You Really Know?

What should I say?

What should I do?

Actually, to tell you the truth

I do have something to say

I know many people think

That just because I

Look the way I am

I have no issues, or

Don’t know anything bad

Yes, I am Greek, but what’s

It to you? I’ve been

Discriminated by my

Own people for not being

“Born” there while in the

Famous U.S. of A. I’m

Known as a foreign

“White” girl

Really? Is that what

You think?

How many of you knew

That the Greeks were

Slaves for over 400 years?

They were repressed:

Told to never speak

Their language ever again,

But they rose up,

And won their independence.

So yeah, some people out

There actually know real

Pain, EVEN if their

Skin isn’t dark

How about my grandmother?

She was shot by the

Rebels in Greece,

Barely making it alive.

So maybe there’s a whole

World out there that

Others don’t know of.

One in which we all

Have had our problems

In the past, even in

The dead, want-to-be-

Forgotten past.

You never know if you

Don’t ask.

Family Ties

Lady Gardener,

Her Maples burn red.

She stands tall above

The waste of Mainstream Commotion, America – “The Great.”

Chilled is thy Lady’s composure

But her arms are open from snow to sea.

She welcomes all to sit

By the fire of her heart –

Ontario the flame, Toronto the ember.

Lady Gardener,

Still as her Maple,

Her branches stretched out

To beckon me home.

I hear USA’s song ringing in my ears.

I hear Mrs. Blaher teaching her great knowledge of English.

I hear Obama giving his worldly speeches

And Rachel Ray’s olives sizzling in a hot pan

And Taylor Swift singing into the hearts of millions.

I hear the audience yelling “JERRY! JERRY!” on channel 5

And the jail door slamming in Michael Vick’s face

And DMX rapping his explicit rhymes.

I hear Dave Chapelle telling his funny jokes

And Michael Jordan’s sneakers sneaking on the court

And Harry Potter yelling abra cadabra into an evil sorcerers face.

These are the verses that we contribute

And compose our own song of America.

Homemade Pride

The door was physically open but,

The air of the room was choking,

there wasn’t enough room for another

especially her. She quivered as she

entered, they calculated her every move.

“What is she wearing?” some thought,

Their eyes pierced through her, she put

Her head down because she didn’t know

Where to turn or go. She had never seen

So many of these people before, she found an

empty seat and finally sat down. The person next

to her asked, “Hey, nice top. Where did you get it?”

and with her distinct accent she smiled and said,

“Thank you. I got it in my country.” Even though

The beginning of her strife she still had home made pride.
