London Calling

The skyline shines, bustling and brilliant in the night

With life coming from the womb of Heathrow, alive come the lights

Sparkling and singing to the variant tune of the crowded streets

Whoever you end up becoming and who you are is what you’ll be back at your conception

But in between twilight and dawn

I am Covent Garden, chattering away culture throughout the boroughs of the city

I am the cobbled streets of Trafalgar feet hurriedly travel across in journey

I am the rowdy and drunken Westminster lads from which you constantly flee

I am the heart and soul of the circus, Piccadilly is my name

Can you see my bright lights? My fortune and fame?

With time at a stand still, I become the breeding ground of art

I am no longer the end of all things, but the start

Of new age and a new day

I am all the things that feel so right they become morally wrong

Lose yourself in the centre and beauty of me

So romantic are the conversations of Hyde Park, love is a decree

Of many years to come within my Tower of Life

That no war may taint me, no violence or strife

I am the reality you choose to travel to on your lazy, rainy days

Through my underground’s veins, you rock and roll to the Clash along the way

Until the sun begins to rise on the fading and hesitant horizon

Until that bridge calls out to me

London,” it says, “your time has inevitably come.

Pack your bags, my love, and take one last look back

At the city you’ve created, at the world you’ve become.

Now, go on home, darling; it’s time for tea.

Don’t you think your mum won’t swallow you in the sea.”
